Lalu Prasad Yadav is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Bihar. He also held the charge of Railway Minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of the Center from 2004 to 2009. He remained in jail for two months after which the Supreme Court released him on bail on 13 December.

Lalu Prasad Yadav was born on 11 June 1948 in Phulwaria village in Gopalganj, Bihar, in a peasant family. His parents were named Marchahiya Devi and Kundan Rai. He received his early education from Gopalganj and went to Patna for further studies. From BN College, Patna, he completed his Bachelor of Law and Post Graduate in Political Science. He was the Chief Minister of Bihar for seven years and after his arrest in the ‘fodder scam’, Lalu resigned as Chief Minister and made his wife Rabri Devi the Chief Minister of Bihar.

He won the Lok Sabha elections from Chhapra and Madhepura and held the post of Union Minister of Railways in the UPA Government. Lalu Prasad Yadav made loss-making railway a profitable organization.
