Mamta Banerjee was born on 5 January 1955 in Kolkata, West Bengal, to Gayatri and Promileswar Banerjee. She belonged to a lower middle class family and started her political journey with the Congress Party. He had expressed his opposition to the poor government by climbing on the bonnet of Jayaprakash Narayan’s car. She was a college student at that time. He graduated in History from Jogmaya Devi College, South Kolkata and received a Master’s degree in Islamic History from Kolkata University. Mamta Banerjee continued her teaching and obtained another degree from Sri Shikshayatan College. Subsequently, he also obtained a law degree from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhary Law College, Kolkata.

Mamta Banerjee started her political journey as a member of the Congress party. She was elected the General Secretary of the State Women’s Congress at a young age (1976–1980). In 1984, she contested from Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency of Kolkata against veteran communist leader Somnath Chatterjee and by winning this election she became the youngest Indian MP. He also served as the General Secretary of All India Youth Congress. She was also the Minister of State for Human Resources, Youth Welfare – Sports and Women and Child Development Department in the Narasimha Rao government in 1991. He resigned as a protest after the government did not get the sports development plan proposed by him. Mamta Banerjee said in very clear terms that she needs a clean Congress. As a Union Minister in 1996, he had protested against the increase in the price of petrol by his own government. Due to differences with the Congress, he decided to leave the Congress party and form his own party and founded the All India Trinamool Congress. In a short span of time, his party raised a tough challenge against the communist government of Bengal.
