Mamta Banerjee, a daughter of Gayatri and Promileswar, was born in Kolkata, West Bengal on 5 January 1955. She was born to a lower-middle class family and began her political career with the Congress Party. Jayaprakash Narayan had given him the opportunity to protest the poor government. He allowed him to climb on Jayaprakash Narayan’s bonnet. She was a college student in that period. He received his History degree from Jogmaya Devi College in South Kolkata, and a Master’s in Islamic History from Kolkata University. Mamta Banerjee continued to teach and received a second degree from Sri Shikshayatan College. He also received a law degree at Jogesh Chandra Chaudhary College, Kolkata.

Mamta Banerjee began her political career as a Congress member. In 1976-1980, she was elected General Secretary of State Women’s Congress. She was elected the youngest Indian politician in 1984 when she ran against Somnath Chaterjee, a veteran communist leader. He was also the General Secretary for All India Youth Congress. In 1991, she was also Minister of State for Human Resources, Youth Welfare- Sports and Child Development Department under the Narasimha Rao government. After the government failed to implement his sports development plan, he resigned. Mamta Banerjee stated in clear terms that she needed a clean Congress. He was a Union Minister who protested against the rise in petrol prices by his government in 1996. He decided to quit the Congress party and create his own party, the All India Trinamool Congress. His party was able to challenge the communist government in Bengal within a very short time.

Mamta Banerjee NDA joined the coalition government in 1999 and was appointed as Union Railway Minister. He also fulfilled the majority of his promises to West Bengalis. During the financial year 2000-2001, he announced 19 new trains. He took the NDA in 2001 after a number of allegations were made against him. The coalition also broke with the government, but he re-joined the NDA in 2004. He was elected to the position of Minister of Coal and Mines. In 2006, the Trinamool Congress was defeated in the assembly elections. This was his biggest failure. This led to the Trinamool Congress aligning with the UPA government, and Mamata Banerjee being again appointed railway minister. His political career took a new turn with the 2011 assembly elections. With the election victory of the Trinamool Congress on the 20th May 2011, Mamta Benderjee became the first female Chief Minister of West Bengal.
