Ram Jethmalani was born on 14 September 1923 in Shikarpur (now Pakistan), Sindh. His father’s name was Bhulchand Gurmukhadas Jethmalani and mother’s name was Parbati Bhulchand. His early studies were in local school. He was smart in studies, so he was promoted twice in school to a higher class than his regular class, which resulted in his passing the matriculation examination at the age of just 13. At the age of 17, he took SC of Karachi. Ram Jethmalani started his career as a professor in Sindh. After this, he gave his friend A.K. Together with Brohi (later became Law Minister of Pakistan) established a law firm in Karachi. When riots broke out in Karachi after Partition in 1948, it was Brohi who advised him to leave Pakistan and go to India.
In 1953, he started teaching at Government Law College, Mumbai. Here he taught undergraduate and postgraduate students. He also taught Comparative Law and International Law at Wayne State University in Detroit, USA.

In 1971, he contested for the Lok Sabha from Ulhas Nagar constituency for the first time, but was not successful. During the Emergency in the country (1975-77) he was the President of the ‘Bar Council of India’ and strongly criticized the then Prime Minister. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued against him, after which he left the country and moved to Canada. He returned to India after the end of the Emergency.
In the 1977 elections after the Emergency, he gave the then Law Minister H.R. He entered the Lok Sabha for the first time after defeating Gokhale from the Bombay Lok Sabha constituency but could not become a law minister as Morarji Desai did not like his lifestyle. He again won the Lok Sabha elections in 1980, but could not succeed against Sunil Dutt in 1985.
He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1988 and in 1996 was made Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs in the Vajpayee government. In 1998, he was made the Minister of Urban Affairs and Employment but in 1999 he was again made Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, but the then Supreme Court Judge A.S. His controversial statement on Anand led Prime Minister Vajpayee to ask him to step down.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he stood against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as an independent candidate from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency but faced a crushing defeat.
In 2010, he was again made a member of the Rajya Sabha by the Bharatiya Janata Party from Rajasthan. In 2012, he called on the leaders of the ‘Bharatiya Janata Party’ UPA. He wrote a letter to the then party president Nitin Gadkari alleging silence on the scandals during the government, after which he was expelled from the party in May 2013 for six years.
