His father Diwan Singh was a DTC bus driver, while his mother Kamla Devi was a housewife. He got inspiration from his cousin Sandeep and his father to go to wrestling, both of whom trained Sushil.

But after some time, understanding the financial situation of the family, Sandeep gave up wrestling. From the age of 14, Sushil used to practice wrestling in the arena of Chhatrasal Stadium. Despite not having adequate means and skilled training for wrestling in India, he made his place in the 2008 Olympics team and his family also used to send him milk, ghee and vegetables for his good health.

He believes in Hinduism a lot and is also a pure vegetarian. Kumar is currently serving as Assistant Commercial Manager in Indian Railways.

He had his first success at the 1998 World Cadet Games, where he won a gold medal in his weight category and then also won the gold medal at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championships in 2000. He later won the Bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in 2003 and the Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in 2003.

Kumar finished fourth in the 2003 World Championships but Indian media did not pay much attention to it and then he was ranked 14th in the weight category of 60 kg at the 2004 Olympics. After this, he won gold medals in the 2005 and 2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships.

He held the 7th position in the 2007 World Championships and also won the Bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics and became the first Indian to win two medals at the Olympics in person. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in the year 2006 and also the Padma Shri by the Government of India in the year 2011.
